It’s estimated that tens of millions of men, women, and children suffer from TMJ and TMD many of whom have no knowledge of their TMJ condition or how to seek TMJ treatments from a TMJ Doctor or Dentist. Headaches and pain are the most common complaints from those afflicted with TMJ. Around 80% of patients with a TMJ disorder complain of a debilitating headache, and over 40% report some kind of facial pain.

"Patients with metabolic syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are more likely to reverse the former if they treat the latter with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.

A new study planned for presentation at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2020 International Conference this year showed the commonly primary treatment of OSA could have a five-fold greater probability of reversing metabolic syndrome—a clinical achievement linked to decreased cardiovascular risk." Normal inflammation is an important part of your body’s defenses, as it’s a series of signals to your immune system to trigger a defense against foreign bodies and begin the healing process. Your blood vessels dilate in the afflicted area, and your blood flow increases. White blood cells flood in to neutralize or destroy any intruders.

Normal inflammation can include: ✔️ Redness or swelling ✔️ Slight pain ✔️ Fever

You’ve most likely experienced this autoimmune response with a common cut or scrape – the area around the edge of the healing scab can be raised and red as your immune system fights off the bacteria that may have entered. But this reaction also occurs with a common sore throat, which can lead to swollen glands, and increase in temperature.

Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, occurs when the inflammation is long-lasting, and begins to spread to other tissues in the body. This type of systemic inflammation is often life-changing, as, if left unchecked, it can trigger an autoimmune disease.

A poorly structured and functioning airway leads to mouth breathing, snoring and sleep apnea; it can interfere with restorative sleep and ultimately damage the part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex, which controls executive function skills, attentiveness, anxiety and depression.

If you don’t breathe well it can have a huge impact on your health. And if your airway is compromised while you sleep, your breathing is impacted for a third of your life! This often results in exhaustion, lack of focus, and difficulty thriving in your daily life.

Too often these airway issues go undetected – and untreated. Instead, you try to treat the results of an airway sleep disorder – headache, depression, anxiety, obesity, insomnia, high blood pressure, diabetes, or autoimmune disease. But by ignoring the root cause, you ignore the underlying damage provoking these conditions.

The AirwayCentric® approach helps healthcare practitioners and patients understand the impact of a narrowed airway – and also that you need to treat an airway sleep disorder before tackling Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), teeth grinding or clenching, bite and occlusion. It focuses on a multidisciplinary approach – a collaboration between doctor, dentist, orthodontist, and ENT at the very least. Even more excitingly, it’s never too late to take action.

As you’re used to making an appointment with your primary care doctor, so that they can refer you to a specialist, the idea of consulting a dentist to help with sleep apnea, or any other ASD, may seem downright odd. But AirwayCentric® Dentistry focuses on your sleep disordered breathing because we recognize that your body isn’t made up of separate parts – everything is linked. Unfortunately a narrowed airway day or night can cause a number of health issues which may not be obvious or intuitive.

Establishing a routine can facilitate a sense of normalcy even in abnormal times. It’s easier for your mind and body to acclimate to a consistent sleep schedule, which is why health experts have long recommended avoiding major variation in your daily sleep times.

Set regular times to wake up and wind down each night. In addition, it can be helpful to get up and ready every morning, even if you aren't leaving the house, as well as blocking off time in your schedule to eat or exercise.

When the body detects an intruder, it launches a biological response to try to remove it.

"Positive airway pressure (PAP, such as continuous PAP (CPAP) or bilevel PAP (BPAP) is used to treat disordered breathing during sleep, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), or hypoventilation (as may be seen in patients with Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, COPD, or neuromuscular diseases). If you are using PAP, you may have concerns about using your machine if you get sick with a respiratory infection and are concerned about COVID-19 infection. “A new study published April 22 in the Journal of the American Medical Association characterizes the symptoms, comorbidities, and clinical outcomes of 5,700 patients hospitalized because of COVID-19 in the New York area. The authors found that 94 percent of the patients had a chronic health problem, and 88 percent had two or more. The three most prevalent conditions were hypertension (56.6 percent), obesity (41.7 percent), and diabetes (33.8 percent).” The percentage of COVID-19 patients with at least one underlying health condition or risk factor was higher among those requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission (358 of 457, 78%) and those requiring hospitalization without ICU admission (732 of 1,037, 71%) than that among those who were not hospitalized (1,388 of 5,143, 27%). The most commonly reported conditions were diabetes mellitus, chronic lung disease, and cardiovascular disease.

These preliminary findings suggest that in the United States, persons with underlying health conditions or other recognized risk factors for severe outcomes from respiratory infections appear to be at a higher risk for severe disease from COVID-19 than are persons without these conditions.
